Itinerary

Wed 27 Dec

Lunchtime arrival in Innsbruck and transfer to the 4-star Natural Hideaway Kaysers Hotel, located approximately 30 minutes from Innsbruck city. This family-run hotel promotes relaxation in an idyllic Alpine setting on the Mieming Plateau. A welcome lunch will be served at the hotel, followed by the afternoon at leisure and dinner, also at the hotel.

Thu 28 Dec

Join your guide this morning for a visit to the baroque Cistercian Stams Abbey, one of the Tirol’s true architectural gems, and boasting a unique altarpiece depicting an intricate tree of life. We take a guided tour before returning to the hotel for a free afternoon. Dinner at the hotel before transferring to Innsbruck for the opera performance at the Landestheater.

Fri 29 Dec

Today we return to Innsbruck for a walking tour of the picturesque centre, seeing sights including the ‘Golden Roof’, decorated with 2,738 firegilded copper tiles to mark the marriage of Emperor Maximilian I to Bianca Maria Sforza, the Imperial Palace and the Hofkirche. There will be free time for shopping and lunch before continuing on to Salzburg. Arriving in the early evening, we check in to upgraded rooms at the 5-star Radisson Hotel Altstadt, situated in the heart of the Old Town. Optional evening ballet performance at the Landestheater.

Sat 30 Dec

This morning we walk through Salzburg, Mozart’s birthplace and home for many years. We visit his birth house where the Mozart family lived from 1747 to 1773, now a museum with the 2nd floor devoted to his operas, as well as many other sites of interest. The afternoon is at leisure before the evening opera performance at the Landestheater.

Sun 31 Dec

Today is free for your own exploration of the historic city, whose Old Town is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. In the evening we attend the New Year’s Eve gala concert at the Grosses Festspielhaus, followed by a festive dinner at the hotel.

Mon 1 Jan

Transfer to Salzburg airport for your homeward journey.

RECOMMENDED RECORDING

La Gioconda (Callas, Ferraro, Cappuccilli, Vinco; La Scala, Votto)

Maria Callas is on typically blistering form in the title-role on this 1959 recording, made in studio but crackling with all the energy of a live performance; the Italian mezzo Fiorenza Cossotto (then just 24) is scarcely less imposing as her love-rival Laura, and Antonino Votto wrings every last drop of melodrama from Ponchielli’s score. Newly remastered in 2014.
