RECOMMENDED RECORDING

La clemenza di Tito (Harmonia Mundi, HMC901923/24; Padmore, Pendatchanska, Fink, Chappuis, Im, Foresti; Freiburger Barockorchester, Jacobs)

René Jacob’s electrifying period-instrument Tito on Harmonia Mundi was released in 2006, when it was Radio 3 CD Review’s Critics’ Disc of the Year and Building A Library’s first choice for Mozart’s final opera. Bulgarian soprano Alexandrina Pendatchanska is formidable as the manipulative Vitellia, contrasting well with the lighter, more lyrical voices of Mark Padmore as the emperor and Bernarda Fink in the trouser-role of Sesto.
