Itinerary

Mon 20 Nov

Early evening arrival in Bologna and transfer to Ravenna by coach (approx. 1 hour). We check in at the 4-star Hotel NH Ravenna, located in the centre of the city and close to many of the historical sights. Welcome dinner in a local restaurant.

Tue 21 Nov

This morning meet your guide for a walking tour of Ravenna. We see some of the most important buildings which contain mosaics of the early Christian and Byzantine eras, including the San Vitale Basilica and the Galla Placidia Mausoleum. We also visit the Domus dei Tappeti di Pietra, one of the most important recent archaeological discoveries in Italy. Dating from the Roman Republic through the Byzantine time, this small palace boasted floors covered with marble tarsia or mosaics. After being restored, the ‘carpets’ of stone were placed in an underground room, entered from the 18th-century Church of Sant’Eufemia. Afternoon at leisure before the first evening performance at Teatro Alighieri.

Wed 22 Nov

This morning we visit the Sant’Apollinare Nuovo Basilica by foot, and then travel by coach to the Mausoleum of Theodoric, built in 520 AD, and the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe, which contains exceptional Byzantine mosaics. Return to Ravenna for a free afternoon and the evening performance.

Thu 23 Nov

Today we make a tour ‘in the footsteps of Dante’, visiting the Basilica di San Francesco where his funeral was held in 1321, and his tomb. We also see the Battistero degli Ariani, and take a short coach ride to the Battistero Neoniano. The tour will be followed by a farewell lunch in a local restaurant. There will then be some free time before the evening performance at Teatro Alighieri.

Fri 24 Nov

Check out and transfer to Bologna airport for your homeward flight.

RECOMMENDED RECORDING

Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci (Westbroek, Antonenko, Platanias, Giannattasio; Royal Opera House, Pappano, Michieletto)

DVD/Blu-ray: 2016, Opus Arte OA1210D [DVD] and OABD7200D [Blu-ray]

Damiano Michieletto’s 2015 production for Covent Garden updates the action of both operas to the same poor Italian village in the late twentieth century, presenting the famous pair of one-acters as a convincing continuous narrative rather than a game of two halves. Antonio Pappano conducts with obvious relish in the scores’ heart-on-sleeve emotions and bold primary colours; in a strong ensemble cast Eva-Maria Westbroek’s raw, vulnerable Santuzza stands out, and Aleksandrs Antonenko does impressive double-duty as local lothario Turiddu and homicidal clown Canio.
