Lunchtime arrival in Berlin and transfer by coach to Chemnitz (approx. 3.5 hours) to check in at the 4-star Hotel Chemnitzer Hof, a traditional hotel established in 1929 and located next door to the Opera. Welcome dinner will be served at the hotel.

Thu 18 Apr

This morning we take a walking tour to see the main sights of the town, known from 1953 to 1990 as Karl-Marx-Stadt, and then renamed after its river. The tour is followed by lunch in a local restaurant. Afternoon at leisure before the early evening performance at the Opera..

Fri 19 Apr

Join your guide to visit the Villa Esche, an art nouveau villa designed by Henry van de Velde in 1902/03 for the Chemnitz based stocking manufacturer Herbert Esche. The villa is considered a masterpiece of modern architecture and houses the first Henry van de Velde museum in Germany. After the tour we return to Chemnitz for the mid-afternoon performance.

The day is at leisure for independent shopping and sightseeing before the mid-afternoon performance.

Sun 21 Apr

Today we travel outside of the city into the Ore Mountains (approx. 1.5 hours by coach). From here we continue to the town of Freiberg, where we attend an organ concert at the Cathedral. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant before returning to Chemnitz via Seiffen where we see the local craftsmen at work. Evening at leisure.

Mon 22 Apr

This morning we visit the Saxon Museum of Industry (subject to confirmation), which showcases collections of cultural artefacts, thus preserving Saxony's industrial heritage, including the Chemnitz Tar Mummy, a mummified human body which has been on display since 2003. Mid-afternoon performance.

Tue 23 Apr

Check out and transfer to Berlin for your homeward flight, with lunch served in a local restaurant en route.
