CD: Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen
Recorded at Bayreuth in 1955, the first Ring Cycle in stereo still outclasses many later rivals, thanks in no small part to the spellbinding conducting of Joseph Keilberth who rings every last drop of suspense and tension from the mammoth narrative. The singers, too, have rarely been bettered, particularly Astrid Varnay’s incandescent Brünnhilde, Gré Brouwenstijn’s urgent Sieglinde, and Hans Hotter’s towering Wotan, catching both the god’s authority and his fatal flaws like few others. DVD: Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen
Referencing Marxism and the Industrial Revolution, Patrice Chéreau’s 1976 production caused controversy when it was first performed at Bayreuth to mark the festival’s centenary, but by the time it was filmed four years later it was acknowledged as a masterpiece for its astute exploration of the power-dynamics at work in the cycle. Boulez supports his vision with conducting of great clarity; in a strong cast, Peter Hofmann’s ardent Siegmund and Gwyneth Jones’s radiant Brünnhilde stand out. (Deutsche Grammophon; 0734057)
