Itinerary

Thu 19 Oct

Early evening arrival in Bologna, and transfer by coach to Parma (approx. 1 hour). Check in at the officially rated 5-star Hotel de la Ville, close to the centre of the city. Welcome dinner in the hotel.

Fri 20 Oct

Today we travel to the nearby town of Roncole to see Verdi’s birthplace, a humble tavern-residence. We then continue on to Busseto to visit the Casa Barezzi, home to Verdi’s patron and father-in-law Antonio Barezzi, and where he gave his first public performance in 1830. We also visit the Teatro Verdi, built in his honour and opened in 1868. There will then be an opportunity to taste the local culatello ham, followed by lunch in a local restaurant. Return to Parma for a free afternoon and the evening performance.

Sat 21 Oct

Join your guide for a walking tour of Parma, during which we visit the beautiful Romanesque Duomo and the graceful octagonal Baptistry in rose-coloured marble, containing late-Renaissance frescoes by Correggio. We continue to the birthplace of Arturo Toscanini, one of the greatest conductors of the 20th-century, and see the Camera di San Paolo, a room in the former Convent of San Paolo which contains a masterpiece of fresco work by Correggio. Afternoon at leisure – there may be the possibility to take a backstage tour of the Teatro Regio if rehearsal schedules permit. Optional evening performance at the Teatro Farnese.

Sun 22 Oct

This morning we journey out of town to Modena to visit the Museo Casa Pavarotti, dedicated to the memory of the world-famous tenor. After the tour we return to Parma for an independent lunch before the matinee performance at the Teatro Regio and a free evening.

Mon 23 Oct

Transfer to Bologna for the homeward flight.
