Itinerary

Tue 11 May

Lunchtime arrival in Berlin and transfer by coach to Chemnitz (approx. 3.5 hours) to check in at the 4-star Hotel Chemnitzer Hof, a traditional hotel established in 1929 and located next door to the Opera. A welcome dinner will be served at the hotel.

Wed 12 May

This morning we take a walking tour to see the main sights of the town, known from 1953 to 1990 as Karl-Marx-Stadt, and then renamed after its river. The tour is followed by lunch in a local restaurant. Afternoon at leisure before the evening performance at the Opera.

Thu 13 May

Join your guide to visit the Villa Esche, an art nouveau villa designed by Henry van de Velde in 1902/03 for the Chemnitz based stocking manufacturer Herbert Esche. The villa is considered a masterpiece of modern architecture and houses the first Henry van de Velde museum in Germany. After the tour we return to Chemnitz for the mid-afternoon performance.

Fri 14 May

The day is at leisure for independent shopping and sightseeing before the mid-afternoon performance.

Sat 15 May

Today we travel outside of the city into the Ore Mountains (approx. 1 hour by coach). From here we continue to the town of Freiberg for a guided tour. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant before returning to Chemnitz via Seiffen for a chance to see the local craftsmen at work. Evening at leisure.

Sun 16 May

Join your guide this morning to visit the Saxon Museum of Industry, which showcases collections of cultural artefacts, thus preserving Saxony's industrial heritage, including the Chemnitz Tar Mummy, a mummified human body which has been on display since 2003. Return to Chemnitz for the final mid-afternoon performance.
